Workshop Day 1:
The first part of the day will be about lighting and Joey’s personal
approach to creating iconic images. We looked at his work and then went about
deconstructing the image. This was fascinating and could have spent two day
just doing that. We went through various lighting setups inside the photogenic
studio in a controlled environment and also on location. The models were
beautiful and each very different. (Pictures at the end of the blog.)
Joey then went though three different setups; this was fantastic as the shots were not preplanned, spotting a large gothic window with loads of light coming though, on goes the haze machine. This created beautiful volumetric light working with a huge light bank it created such a great image. We were then split into three groups we had time working on our own imagery armed with the new Joey knowledge. Wrap for the first day.

Workshop Day 2:
Understanding the business aspect and how to
sell yourself is just as important as taking good pictures. This morning we
looked at Joey’s website and broke down what works and what does not. Some
students were brave enough to have their websites critiqued; the standard of
the group was incredible and it was a pleasure spending the weekend with such
talent and nice people.
After lunch we went on location with Joey, a
small basement bar, three models and the challenge to create a great picture.
The basement leaded itself to be pictured, very atmospheric. Working light-to-light
Joey built a fantastic composite and the light was something else. I hopeful add this picture when Joey sends it
out to the group.

The latter part of the day was all about retouching. We choose select
images created during the earlier part of the day, and using Joey’s workflow we
learnt how he does what he does.
This weekend was a real eye opener and I learnt more I ever imagined.
I look forward to put these enhanced skills into practice.
