Charity Fashion Show

People are were invited to show their support for some good causes while enjoying the latest fashion trends. Bath and North East Somerset Council chairman Councillor Rob Appleyard was hosting an Elegance in the Afternoon charity fashion show. It raised money for the Royal United Hospital's Forever Friends Cancer Care Appeal, The Carer's Centre and Julian House. The show took place at the Banqueting Room of the Guildhall on April 27.
This Fashion Show had two different sets for photographing; after hair and makeup the models came to a set where all the strobes were setup ready; and the second was more of a fly on the wall documentery shoot covering the main show. The later images will follow, this blog is about the studio shoot. In which we actually only has 30minutes to shoot the models before the call for the main event. Speed was of the essence and there were a lot of models to shoot.

The lighting was simple, only using 2 lights and on the Phase One I used a 0.9 ND filter to stop right down to keep the beautiful depth of field of the 80mm schneider lens.
My assistant Mark was awesome and worked his butt off; also managed to film a little bit of the shoot. I'm really happy with the results.

Joey L. Workshop London

 Joey L. Workshop London

Basic Summary:
Go on set with commercial photographer Joey L. and witness every crucial step that goes into creating his iconic portraits. Discover cinematic lighting and post-production techniques in Photoshop, and learn how to create some work of your own with truly stunning results.

As a photographer and a massive fan of Joey’s I had to be on this workshop and it did not disappoint! Joey is a true master and a really nice guy.

Workshop Day 1:
The first part of the day will be about lighting and Joey’s personal approach to creating iconic images. We looked at his work and then went about deconstructing the image. This was fascinating and could have spent two day just doing that. We went through various lighting setups inside the photogenic studio in a controlled environment and also on location. The models were beautiful and each very different. (Pictures at the end of the blog.)

Joey then went though three different setups; this was fantastic as the shots were not preplanned, spotting a large gothic window with loads of light coming though, on goes the haze machine. This created beautiful volumetric light working with a huge light bank it created such a great image. We were then split into three groups we had time working on our own imagery armed with the new Joey knowledge. Wrap for the first day.

Workshop Day 2:

Understanding the business aspect and how to sell yourself is just as important as taking good pictures. This morning we looked at Joey’s website and broke down what works and what does not. Some students were brave enough to have their websites critiqued; the standard of the group was incredible and it was a pleasure spending the weekend with such talent and nice people.

After lunch we went on location with Joey, a small basement bar, three models and the challenge to create a great picture. The basement leaded itself to be pictured, very atmospheric. Working light-to-light Joey built a fantastic composite and the light was something else.  I hopeful add this picture when Joey sends it out to the group.

Above: a short clip of the lesson in the basement

The latter part of the day was all about retouching. We choose select images created during the earlier part of the day, and using Joey’s workflow we learnt how he does what he does.

This weekend was a real eye opener and I learnt more I ever imagined. I look forward to put these enhanced skills into practice.

Final three images:

I can recommend this book, it is fantastic, with complete breakdowns of some of Joey's most famous works.
